Local Leisure group changing people’s lives

Local Leisure group changing people’s lives

An inspirational local person with Cerebral Palsy (C.P.) has had her life turned around thanks to South Downs Leisure’s community-based Exercise Referral Scheme, in partnership with Worthing Wellbeing.

Francesca Leather
Francesca Leather, 24, from Worthing, started the popular programme in June, 2015, at Splashpoint Leisure Centre, Worthing, where she was personally supported and mentored by Marie Pickering; Exercise Referral Coordinator, Personal Trainer and Fitness Advisor for South Downs Leisure.

Lifelong C.P. sufferer and wheelchair bound, Francesca has decreased mobility, co-ordination and balance but despite her condition, maintains a career for the Care Quality Commission inspecting residential care homes. She’s refused to let her condition hold her back, with tenacity and true spirit, Francesca said;

“I am a very positive and motivated young woman and I like to explore the ability within my disability! I have many goals and aspirations in life that includes improving my health.”

Already established for the leisure group, the Exercise Referral Scheme provides wellbeing support for those most in need.  Marie, 38, from Worthing, a qualified Personal Trainer with South Downs Leisure since 2003, creates personalised, tailor-made exercise programmes that consider every individual’s needs, including medical conditions or ailments. And thanks to its success, the scheme’s popularity has grown, having doubled to over 200 clients within the last year. Marie said;

“It’s simple to arrange, just ask your GP or health professional about the scheme, they will assess you and create a ‘prescription to exercise’. This is your referral you take to Worthing Leisure Centre or Splashpoint Leisure Centre to book an appointment.”

Since Francesca started sessions with Marie at Splashpoint Leisure Centre, she’s noticed significant improvements to her overall health, mobility, physical and emotional wellbeing. Inspired by her positivity, Marie said;

“Francesca never lets her wheelchair be a barrier for using gym equipment and instead we find ways to improvise, adapt and overcome all obstacle and her health has benefitted immensely.”

Marie then added; “I am very proud of the good work we do for the Exercise Referral Scheme, with achievable personal benefits for every client. Typical exercise routines aren’t always suitable, so a 1-to-1, personalised approach is required. Welcome extra benefits, like confidence building and weightloss, have turned people’s lives around; improving quality of life, reduced pain and increased wellbeing.”

South Downs Leisure’s Chief Executive, Duncan Anderson, said;

“Strong partnerships with local community groups are essential going forward, as well as building on our core strengths and investing in our products, facilities and initiative’s such as this, to meet the needs of our community. Marie and the team have been instrumental behind the success of this scheme.”

Training at the Football Centre, the team welcomed its first female Striker, Linda Palombo, 63, from Worthing. A former Crystal Palace Ladies player back in the 1980’s, she’s no stranger to the ‘Beautiful Game’. She said;
“I loved playing for Palace Ladies, we were among the first ladies football teams, so I was delighted to join Worthing Strikers playing at the Football Centre.”

Get on your bike

Beach House grounds, adjacent to Splashpoint Leisure Centre, welcomed Worthing’s first street Velodrome, encouraging local cyclists to join some of the country’s best pro-riders including Craig MacLean MBE, Olympic Cyclist, and Anna Glowinski, presenter of ITV4’s The Cycling Show. The ‘Green Team’

Sustainable Sussex Local community gardens ‘Green Team’, Sustainable Sussex, have cultivated more than their crops, they’ve also nurtured local talent.  Inspired volunteer gardener, Jenny Overington, 22, Worthing, joined via Aldingbourne Trusts WorkAid scheme which helps young adults get into work. Based within Worthing Leisure Centre’s grounds, Jenny’s joined by founder, Keith Collin, 39, and grows an expanding range of produce, including chilli’s. They also organise green initiatives like water conservation, solar energy and waste recycling on site. After just six months, Jenny’s self-confidence and skillset have grown enormously and she’s started her dream job as a Gardening Technician at Wyevale Garden Centre, Findon - retaining her role with Keith.

Green Flag Awards for Field Place

Green Flag AwardWe are pleased to announce that Field Place has gained a Green Flag Award which recognises the best parks and green spaces across the country. The award boasts high standards of beautifully maintained grounds, excellent facilities, and its extensive wildlife. However, plans to introduce Peacocks have been scrapped due to their ‘destructive nature’, particularly pecking cars, and their distinctively loud squark.

Jane Austen’s leading-lady returns home

Pride and Prejudice Open-air theatre group, Chapterhouse, return to Field Place with Jane Austen’s classic ‘Pride and Prejudice’ for what promises to be an unmissable evening of entertainment, high-emotion and drama. Picnic on the picturesque lawns of Field Place Manor House, whilst immersing yourself in Austen’s best-known classic love story told on the open-air stage. Janna Fox, 32, who plays Austen’s heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, in the performance was born in Leeds and raised in Hove. Janna will be re-joining her family and said she’s delighted to be back performing on home turf. Janna trained at the Drama Studio, London, achieved acclaim on stage and screen, including ‘The Longest Day’, commercials for BBC iplayer and various music videos. But the stage is where her heart is, performing all over the country and here in Sussex. She was also a Hove-regular on the singer-songwriter circuit, gaining local notoriety. Janna said;
“I am really excited to be performing in Worthing. I haven't been home much because I‘ve been very busy in the theatre. I’ve heard Field Place is beautiful and can't wait to perform so close to home.”

Hello from South Downs Leisure

My name is James Spencer, Business Development Officer for South Downs Leisure and welcome to my first, inaugural blog. Every month, I will be reporting and logging events, initiatives and goings-on within Worthing’s most successful leisure group.

Health and Wellbeing

We’ve recently been awarded funding for our hugely successful Exercise Referral scheme to flourish for another year, thanks to our partnership with Adur & Worthing Wellbeing team. Beating local competition, our coordinator, Marie Pickering, works with referred local people from all over the community, of all ages and abilities, and she has seen referrals double to over 200 in the past year. Common complaints include back injuries, anxiety, depression, and a wide variety of physical disabilities. A client of Marie’s stated;“When I first visited Marie, thanks to a chance meeting with my GP, I was in poor health and felt it was too late to change my life. I had no confidence and gyms were never a place I visited. Marie changed that with a plan that was built around my abilities and health issues. As I slowly got better, my confidence grew and I found I was more able to cope with stress, had more energy and I lost weight too. Marie supported me, every step of my journey and it’s literally transformed my life.”In addition, we’ve created dedicated Health and Wellbeing boards at Splashpoint and Worthing Leisure Centre, and introduced help-pages on our website providing local help and advice from organisations such as the Samaritans, Alcoholics Anonymous and Mind. Old uniform has found a new home

In May this year we changed our name from Worthing Leisure and became South Downs Leisure, leaving 350 staff members old uniforms redundant. But thanks to the Link to Hope ‘Shoebox Appeal’, hundreds of old sportswear items will be shipped to Ukraine and Moldova. Lisa Hector, MD of Link to Hope, said:“Link to Hope reaches out to children and adults from the poorest, most vulnerable and exploited areas of volatile, war-torn countries in Eastern Europe. Donations are lifelines for those struggling to cope. That’s why we are so grateful to receive a large consignment from South Downs Leisure.”

Night to Remember

Another Night To Remember! The 2015 Midnight Walk 1200 walkers took to the streets of Worthing for the St.Barnabus House all-night charity walk, Saturday 27th June. A magnificent£162,000 was raised for the charity, walking for 7, 13 or 20 miles, with start and finish lines located at Worthing Leisure Centre. Organiser, Lucy Bone, praised our staff for their enthusiasm, working through the night. In an exciting turn of events, Midnight Walk volunteer and Field Place Facility Manager, Mark Byerley, had to abandon his post last minute. The reasons for this became clear that night; it was announced that Mark became a Dad to a bouncing baby boy!

Employees Sporting Achievements

Two of our employees, Personal Trainer, Jamie Christie and Duty Staff member, Katie Gleeson, have gone for gold and scored in their chosen sports.
Jamie, 24, from Worthing, is a competing Body Builder that recently achieved glory in a national competition.
Katie Gleeson, 20, also from Worthing, has been selected to represent the UK at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for rifle shooting. And she needs your help! To receive funding from clothing giant, Jack Wills, Katie needs your votes. You can vote by visiting the Jack Wills page

The 2012 Legacy Lives on

I had the pleasure of spectating Worthing’s own Legacy Games at Worthing Leisure Centre on Wednesday 17th and Wednesday 24th June.  Over 2000 school children from all over Worthing took part in Olympics-inspired sports. Organised by the Worthing School Sports Association (WSSA), Ali Groves and Tina Price have seen more children taking up sports and being more active, thanks to the Legacy Games.For more information about the Legacy Games visit http://wssape.weebly.com/

Sporting Firsts

The UK’s fastest growing sport came to the Leisure Centre. On the 27th June we hosted a Fencing Open Day, under the expert supervision of three-times Olympian Fencer, Steve Paul – and James Bond stunt double in ‘Die Another Day’.  We also welcomed Wheelchair Fencing, organised by well-known disabled FIT4 Fitness Instructor and champion for disabled people in sports, Penny Clapcott. Both events were well-received and enjoyed by many who participated, requesting more Fencing events soon.On July 4th we welcomed our newest activities, Walking on the Downs and Cycling on the Downs. Both social and group-based, lead by experts in their field, were great fun and hugely beneficial to those seeking a more social, active lifestyle.For more information about South Downs Leisure and all our activities and initiatives, check out the rest of our pages on our website. Thanks for reading all about us. Our next blog will be live Monday 17thAugust.
